USA includes Mexico on “black” list of main drug trafficking countries

Washington.- The United States government included Mexico in its blacklist” of the main countries with drug trafficking in their territories.

Through a statement signed by President Joe Biden and released by the White House, USA highlighted that Mexico is one of the main illicit drug producing countries and transit.

The neighboring country pledged to strengthen cooperation with Mexico, considered a key partner like Colombia, to dismantle the drug cartels and combat the production of synthetic drugs such as methamphetamine and fentanyl.

“In Mexico, we must continue to work together to intensify efforts to dismantle criminal organizations and their networks, increase prosecutions of criminal leaders and facilitators, and strengthen efforts to seize illicit assets,” the USA said.

The US government also included Latin American countries such as Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Nicaragua and Peru on its list.

Also listed are Afghanistan, Bahamas, Belize, Burma, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Laos, and Pakistan. In the case of China and India, they are considered a source of compounds that are used to produce some synthetic drugs.

Of the list made up of 22 countries, only Venezuela and Bolivia appear as the nations that failed to fulfill their international commitments against drug trafficking in the last year, according to Washington.

Unlike years past under the government of Donald Trump, in which the US threatened to include Mexico and Colombia on the “black list”, this time the memorandum has a diplomatic tone and invites both countries to work.

“My Government will seek to increase collaboration with key allies, such as Mexico and Colombia, to provide a collective response and expand efforts to address the production and trafficking of dangerous synthetic drugs that are responsible for many of our overdose deaths,” says Biden. .
