Pastoral approach? Pope Francis urges to address the abortion issue as pastors and not as politicians

Italy.- “Abortion is a homicide”, reiterated the Pope Francisco This Wednesday before statements by bishops on the issue, during his flight back to Rome from Slovakia he urged to address the issue as pastors and not as politicians.

When questioned about the proposal of American bishops about denying communion to Catholic politicians who support the laws in favor of the abortion, the pontiff denied refusing to give the Eucharist to someone, “Communion is not a prize for the perfect” assured.

“Abortion is more than a problem, it is a homicide. Whoever aborts a murderer, is like that”, he claimed.

However, he warned that “When the Church, to defend a principle, does not behave like a pastor, it ends up taking a political party”, said.

“It has always been like this, just remember the story”He added after citing the case of Joan of Arc and Savonarola, burned during the Inquisition for heresy.

“What should a pastor do? Being a pastor, he should not go around condemning”, stressed.

“To be a pastor of the excommunicated? Yes. The pastor must be with them. To be a pastor with God’s style. And God’s style is closeness, compassion and tenderness”, explained.

The issue of whether or not to legalize abortion is current in many countries, and even in the United States, President Joe Biden, at the beginning of the month, lashed out at the Supreme Court’s refusal to block a Texas law that prohibits abortion after six weeks pregnant.
